I've read a bunch of great vampire books other than all the ones by Anne Rice. Here is a list of most of them that I've read that I think would be a good read for almost anyone who hasn't read them already!
Voice of the Blood - Jemiah Jefferson (this is not for the young or faint of heart.. it has explicit sex in it as well as some not so pleasent events... but it is a wonderful story and the main character vampire Daniel is an absolute dream).
Wounds - Jemiah Jefferson (this is the sequel to VOTB and also has explicit sex and gore).
Dracula - Bram Stoker
Lost Souls - Poppy Z. Brite
Forever and the Night - Linda Lael Miller
Sips of Blood - Mary Ann Mitchell (book 1 in the Marquis de Sade series)
Quenched - Mary Ann Mitchell (book 2 in the Marquis de Sade series)
Cathedral of the Vampires - Mary Ann Mitchell (book 3 in the Marquis de Sade series)
Tainted Blood - Mary Ann Mitchell (book 4 of the Marquis de Sade series)
The Vampire DeSade - Mary Ann Mitchell (book 5 of the Marquis de Sade series)
Covenant with the Vampire - Jeanne Kalogridis (book 1 in the "Diaries of the Family Dracul" trilogy)
Children of the Vampire - Jeanne Kalogridis (book 2 in the "Diaries of the Family Dracul" trilogy)
Lord of the Vampires - Jeanne Kalogridis (book 3 in the "Diaries of the Family Dracul" trilogy)
There's many more, but those are in my opinion the best ones I've read thus far. I really enjoyed the 2 books by Jemiah Jefferson... as well as the 5 by Mary Ann Mitchell. But give them a read.... I know you'll enjoy them!!!!!

Most of the guys I see at the library are dorks, not sexy Aussie surfers! =) The Jeanne Kalogridis books are the ones I meant, Vetala =) Min

Here's a nice varied selection. John Steakley - Vampire$ A great novel, basis for the so-so movie J C Eccarius - The Last Days of Christ the Vampire Vampire-hunters of an even more anarchic persuasion than Steakley's J S Lefanu - Carmilla Classic Victorial lesbian vampire novelette Fred Saberhagen - The Dracula Tapes Bram Stoker's original retold from the vampire's point of view. Les Daniels - The Black Castle First of his "Don Sebastian Chronicles", set at the time of the Inquisition. Other notable novels from the series include "Citizen Vampire" (French revolution) and "Yellow Fog". Richard Matheson - "I am legend" The last man alive versus a planet of vampires Bernard Taylor - "The Moorstone Sickness" No fangs, no gore ... just terrifying. If you don't mind reading from your computer screen, head over to www.blackmask.com/cgi-bin/newlinks/page.cgi?g=index.html&d=1 which has some brilliant free downloads under the "Gothic" and "Folklore" section. For example, you can get "Varney the Vampyre" in its entirety - all 600+ chapters!

I just finished Jemiah Jefferson's latest book "Fiend". It is a prequel to her first vampire novel "Voice of the Blood". This book tells the story of Ricari, whom we meet in the beginning of "VOTB". While it is magnificent in its own right, I was REALLY hoping for a continuation from her second novel "Wounds", simply because I wanted to find out what in the world she's going to do with the vampire Daniel.
However, Daniel does make a significant appearance in "Fiend", as he is Ricari's first fledging. But if you loved "Voice of the Blood" and "Wounds" as much as I did, then you won't be able to resist "Fiend". If you haven't started the series yet make sure you pick it up because it is FANTASTIC!!!

Obviously, many of you have heard of Stephenie Meyer's four novel series of the twilight saga: twilight, new moon, eclipse and breaking dawn. Apparently, now that they've made a movie of the first novel in it's series, these books have suddenly become quite the hit.
If you're into that type of novel portraits, you may want to check out L.J. Smith's beginning series of Night World. So far, there are two books, each containing three stories (all with the same characters, of course). Book one has Secret Vampire, Daughters of Darkness and Spellbinder. Book two has Dark Angel, The Chosen, and Soulmate. Book three, containing Huntress, Black Dawn and Witchlight is due for release soon.
Basically, the Night World series can be summed up as followed: The Night World isn't a place. It's all around us. The creatures of Night World are beautiful and deadly and irresistable to humans. Your best friend could be one - so could your crush. The laws of Night World are very clear: humans must never learn that Night World exists. And members of Night World must never fall in love with a human. Violate the laws and the consequences are terrifying. These are stories about what happens when the rules get broken.
Then, if you're a bit... younger shall we say? And are more intrudged with stories that work within your age limits (ie. the characters in these stories are about your own age) then perhaps P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast's series of The House Of Night will better perk your curiousity. Marked, Betrayed, Chosen and Untaimed are all currently available. And the newest addition called Hunted is scheduled for release come March 2009.
Personal opinion: I quite enjoyed the constant curiousity that sparked when reading this series. Truthfully, they have much included in these books that are so close to accuracy and so easy to believe, whereas the writers didn't base their stories on myth or even steriotyping vampiric abilities. I look forward to seeing what else the characters can get into, and what the writer has tucked away in store.
These series are more of a 'teen' idealistic way of looking at the undead. They take place in a school strictly for Vampires. Or, to better word it, fledglings (children whom are in the process of becoming a vampire but have not finished the change yet). They go through the typical teen torture that comes with youth, but take on a lot more as well as they fight to discover what being one of the undead really means.
Personal opinion: These books seem somewhat skeptical since who in their right mind has ever heard of a school for vampires... But then again, the thing's the students discover, learn, and deal with are quite remarkable. For skeptics, you're constantly thinking in the back of your mind 'as if...' and yet you'll find you're unable to put the books down!
